Biomedical engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes (e.g. diagnostic or therapeutic). This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine: It combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.[1] Biomedical engineering has only recently emerged as its own study, compared to many other engineering fields. Such an evolution is common as a new field transitions from being an interdisciplinary specialization among already-established fields, to being considered a field in itself. Much of the work in biomedical engineering consists of research and development, spanning a broad array of subfields (see below). Prominent biomedical engineering applications include the development of biocompatible prostheses, various diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices ranging from clinical equipment to micro-implants, common imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs, regenerative tissue growth, pharmaceutical drugs and therapeutic biologicals.

Programme overview
Designed with clinical and industrial relevance in mind, our Medical Engineering degree programmes provide you with a firm foundation in the subject, combining technical competence and industrial awareness with crucial personal and clinical skills. Our accredited programmes can also lead to Chartered Engineer status and you will benefit from close interaction with practising clinical and healthcare engineering professionals and visits to clinical and industrial centres, particularly in your final year.
By studying Medical Engineering at Surrey, you will benefit from nearly 50 years’ experience of teaching and research in the field. Teaching is informed by our inteationally renowned Centre for Biomedical Engineering, giving you access to the latest pioneering techniques, such as the analysis of human movement for clinical and sports applications, biomedical signal processing for disease diagnosis, and electrical stimulation for limb movement following spinal cord injury, stroke or cerebral palsy.
You will benefit from close interaction with practising clinical and healthcare engineering professionals and visits to clinical and industrial centres, particularly in your final year.
Our Medical Engineering programmes share a common first year with our Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Aerospace Engineering programmes, giving you the opportunity to communicate with engineers from other specialisations. Direct entry to the MEng programme normally requires higher qualifications, but transfer from the BEng to the MEng is possible during the degree programme, depending on academic performance (normally after year 2). Transfer is also possible from the MEng and BEng programmes without a Professional Training year to ones with (and vice versa). This transfer can be made after year 1, giving you time to consider the benefits of the Professional Training placement year.
